PRESS RELEASE OF THE DUPONT-MORETTI CABINET

Situation of Mr. Maurice KAMTO, Cameroonian political opponent victim of an arbitrary detention Mr. Maurice KAMTO, of Cameroonian nationality, university professor, lawyer registered at the Paris Bar and politician, is the president of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), the main opponent of the ruling power in Cameroon. Officially in second place in the presidential elections of October 2018, Maurice KAMTO claimed victory, and challenged the re-election of President Paul BIYA.

Today, along with more than a hundred other opponents, he is persecuted in the form of legal proceedings leading to arbitrary detentions. On January 26, 2019, the MRC organized totally peaceful marches to protest the practices of the Cameroonian authorities. Many activists and protesters were then injured by live fire by law enforcement officers, others arrested and held since then in illegal conditions and severely detrimental to their fundamental rights.

On January 28, at around 7:30 pm, Mr. Maurice KAMTO was arbitrarily and illegally arrested in Douala during a meeting at the home of a supporter, as well as nearly 80 people, relatives, executives and supporters of the MRC. and journalists, on the basis of a search warrant signed by the Public Prosecutor of Douala Ndokoti. He was then taken overnight to the Special Operations Group in Yaounde, a service attached to the General Delegation of National Security, without any notification of any act justifying detention. His lawyers were unable to locate him and to access him until two days later. Indicted for insurrection, group rebellion, disturbance of public order and hostility against the fatherland, Mr. Maurice KAMTO is now arbitrarily detained, and must be heard by the investigating judge of the Military Court of Yaoundé on February 26th. Mr Maurice KAMTO denounces the persecutions of a political nature of which he is the victim, and the repeated failings of his most fundamental rights. Mr. DUPOND-MORETTI should meet soon with him during a visit he will solicit from the Cameroonian authorities.

Beyond the remedies that can be launched before the Cameroonian courts, on which the recent analysis of international observers note the control of political power, Mr. DUPOND-MORETTI intends to seize any international body likely to note these violations, and call on the international community to intervene to ensure the respect of the fundamental rights of Mr. Maurice KAMTO and his release.
