The head of sate, president Paul Biya has given the total of 1.5 billion CFA francs for the reconstruction of the Mizao and Serawa bridges in the Far-North, collapsed by the rains.
The President of the Republic also sent the Minister of Housing and Urban Development (Minhdu) to the scene of the disaster on August 31, 2019.
Following the heavy rains that collapsed the Mizao bridges at Maroua and Serawa at Tokomberé on August 29, 2019, President Paul Biya decided to release urgently CFAF 1.5 billion for the reconstruction of these infrastructures. He also sent his Minister of Housing and Urban Development (Minhdu), Celestine Ketcha Courtès to find urgent solutions to this disaster.
The work undertaken following the working visit of the Minhdu on August 31, helped to restore the link between Maroua I and Maroua 2 by a bypass. According to sources, the construction of a new bridge to replace the collapsed, had been instructed in 2018 by the head of state. Estimated at more than 4 billion FCFA, this project was awarded to a group of Cameroonian companies that has not yet started.
The emergency reconstruction work on the bridge, we learned, will start without delay. As for the Serawa bridge that connects the population to the high school, schools and hospital of Tokombeé, the rockfill work was launched this September 2 to restore traffic. As soon as the end of the rains estimated on September 15th, reassures the Minhdu, the construction of the more modern slab will be launched. The collapse of these two bridges follows a series of torrential rains that fall in the city of Maroua. A situation that creates floods and risks the sale of some dikes in this part of the country.
