Cameroon - Garoua: One dead and 30 wounded in a fight between military and civilian

A dozen soldiers from the 3rd Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) Garoua beat on Monday, January 8, 2018 party-goers at a place called Yelwa Crossroads, a hot district of the regional capital of the North.

According to the story of Mutations on newsstands this Wednesday, January 10, 2018, that evening, a group of men in uniform shared a pot in a crowded booth near the crossroads. Suddenly, a soldier realizes that his wallet containing a large sum of money has disappeared from his back pocket.

" Between the back and forth to make phone calls and toilets, he no longer knows where he lost his wallet lost in these places where squat many pickpockets. He accuses his neighbors of table, then follows a sharp altercation. Alcohol help, the voices rise immediately and a general brawl breaks out, "the newspaper reports.

The soldiers present beat all the occupants of the bar. And it was when the bar was emptied that calm returned. At the end, says Mutations, " we counted one dead person, the Moktar Hassan, aged 24, and 30 wounded, 10 of whom were in critical condition ." According to witnesses, the young man received several stab wounds from a BIR element.

This witness confides in the columns of the newspaper: " If the occupants of the bar had not taken their legs close to their neck, we would have witnessed a carnage. Only one person was charged, but with the help of alcohol, the others intervened to avoid being lynched by the military. Especially since they already have bad press in the population because of the many abuses they commit every day .

On Tuesday, the governor of the northern region went to the bedside of the wounded interned at the regional hospital of Garoua to inquire about their state of health and to comfort them.
