Paul Biya responds to Maurice Kamto's Allegation: “I was chosen by the People of Cameroon”

In an impromptu state of the nation’s address, Tuesday, September 10, 2019 which centred on thr Anglophone crisis, President Paul Biya in a subtle manner disagreed with militants of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) Party and their leader Professor Maurice Kamto. CRM party members and allies have accused the head of state, of conniving with the constitutional council to ‘rig’ 2018 presidential elections results in favour of Mr Biya.

86-years old Paul Biya reminded his opponents that he was the choice of the people. “With the massive support you gave me during the last presidential election, I intend to work relentlessly with all sons and daughters of the country towards meeting the challenges we are facing in order to improve the welfare of our people especially in terms of infrastructure, water, electricity supply, healthcare delivery and youth employment,” he said.

By this statement, President Paul Biya was telling Cameroonians and the world, his victory was legitimate despite the post electoral protests which led to the arrest and jailing of hundreds of opposition leaders and supporters across the country, January 2019.

President Paul Biya in his thirty minutes speech failed to comment on the plight of over two hundred detained militants of the CRM, including party leader, Pro. Maurice Kamto. To some pundits, this has contradicted Biya’s call for a national dialogue aimed ar examining all problems affecting Cameroon and Cameroonians.
